Unemployment, Taxes & A Job
55These days, I often find myself leaving the television on in the background as a way to keep the deafening silence away as I write new articles for posting on Hubpages and Redgage. Today was no different and as I typed away on the newest bit of political ranting, I heard something that just pushes my button like few things in this world. It’s one of those things that once I hear it, it makes me want to rant and rave to anyone who is in screaming distance. What could that possibility be you ask? The idea that we don’t tax enough in this nation and anyone who has more than two quarters to rub together is a greedy sob that doesn’t pay his “fair” share!
I can understand the aspect of human nature that creates both “envy and greed”, but when did it get so bad that we now feel that if 10% of the population pays 40% of the income taxes while 47% of the population pays nothing or actually receives direct payments, that the 10% is somehow cheating the rest of the population. Do people really not understand the basics of economics in this day and age? I would like to pose a question to each and every one of you and please give it some thought before you answer.
“Have any of you ever gotten a job from a poor person or do you know someone who did”?
If yes, please tell me who that person was as I would like to shake the hand of someone who was able to pay for a building, insurance, inventory, payroll, marketing and the uncountable other aspects that a successful business requires, without a dime to their name. Such an achievement would be a miracle that should be trumpeted from the tops of each and every public building. We have all heard the adage, “it takes money to make money”, yet it seems few truly understand what that means. That would include those Congressmen and Congresswomen who play the role of talking heads on the Sunday television programs. Where do these people think jobs come from, a paper bag?
Even those of us who are struggling to make a living creating new content for the vast wasteland we call the Internet, had to have spent some money to do so? If we are successful, we will actually be able to earn a living at doing so, but seldom will we have the excess resources to hire another individual to assist us in our constant search for content. If we give this dream up and pursue a career in the “real” world, we undoubtedly would do so by searching out a person who is wealthier than ourselves and is willing to spend some of those precious resources by hiring extra labor. We won’t go to our dead broke brother-in-law and ask him to put us on the payroll. In fact, chances are he is also looking for a job. I think that’s why they call them “brothers-in-law”. There seems to be a correlation between not having a job and being an “in-law”.
Then again what do I know! Perhaps I am totally wrong and I have been searching for wealth and happiness in all of the wrong places, but if I am, so are millions of others.
Enjoy!

It's not only in the US, but also here in Jamaica where the poor are being bled dry through taxes and the rich get exempted from paying a certain amount. Either they owe the government millions of dollars or the get write offs. While the poor will lose their homes and business if they owe a dime. This system is so warped.

JD - You nailed it with this one my friend. As an employer of people, I can relate to everything you said. Am I rich? Hell no. Do I make a good living? Yes I do, but I also assume 100% of the risk involved with running a business. And in the process I also provide a damn fine living for 9 other people and their families. I also pay more than my fair share of taxes, permit fees, license fees, insurance, payroll taxes, SS matching, unemployment insurance, and last but not least I buy all the gasoline. When the price of gas goes up, my employees still make the same amount of money. These cost of doing business increases all come out of my share. I work more hours per day than any of my employees, but I love what I do. I have told my employees on more than one occasion that when they become the only ones making any money I will close the doors and we will all be looking for a job. So just keep raising taxes and many small business owners will do the same thing, close the business. I'm sure you will see the unemployment level keep going up as this takes place.
